A tragic incident has left one person dead, and authorities are actively seeking the driver involved in the hit-and-run that occurred early Wednesday morning in southwest Houston.
At approximately 2:30 a.m., as reported by Sgt. Griffiths from the Houston PD’s Vehicular Crimes Division, witnesses observed an individual walking in the southbound main lanes of U.S. 59 freeway.
In a concerning incident, a driver exiting at Beechnut reportedly swerved in an attempt to miss a pedestrian, yet unfortunately still collided with them.
The driver came to a halt but failed to look back or offer assistance, continuing on their way instead.
“Even though a person can not be at fault in the crash, it’s still a crime if they leave the scene without rendering aid when someone is seriously injured or it’s a fatality, or if they leave the scene and don’t give information even on minor crashes,” Sgt. Griffiths explained. “That’s where the crime occurs, is when someone doesn’t stay on scene or doesn’t call or doesn’t give any information.”
As a result of the accident, all southbound lanes have been closed, and motorists are advised to seek alternative routes while the investigation by HPD is ongoing.
