Impaired driver slapped $2.5 Million bond after fatal I-77 crash that killed two women in North Carolina

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol detained and charged a man after two individuals died in an accident on 1-77 South Saturday night.

At 10:10 p.m., the NC State Highway Patrol responded to a tragic crash on I-77 South near mile marker 32.

A 2006 Ford F-250 was going south on I-77 when it collided with a southbound 2023 Kia Sportage, sending both vehicles off the right side of the road and into a guardrail. This led the Kia to overturn.

The Kia’s driver, Jessica Lyndsay Horton, 47, and passenger, Patricia Marie Osorno, 47, both of Mooresville, were ejected and died at the site.

The driver of the Ford, Benjamin Wesley Overton, 31, of Walkertown, was not hurt.

The investigation indicated that excessive speed and impairment were major causes to the incident, and Overton was charged with driving while impaired, negligent and reckless driving, two charges of criminal death by vehicle, and driving with license revoked.

He has a $2.5 million bond and is being held at the Iredell County Detention Center.

The inquiry is still underway, and additional charges are pending.
