Indiana shooting leaves Bakersfield family grieving; husband charged with murder

Three people were killed in a shooting in Haubstadt, Indiana, and a Bakersfield family is in grief. One of the victims’ husbands is the suspect.

The victims were named as Alma Waite, 61, her mother Gloria Tapia, 81, and her son Fernando Tapia Ramirez Sr., 39. The victims had resided in the Bakersfield region until a few years ago.

During the altercation, Alma’s 44-year-old son was also shot and suffered critical injuries. He was very ill when he was brought to the hospital. There have been no recent developments about his health.

The victims’ relatives informed Eyewitness News that they were from Bakersfield and had relocated to Indiana. A few years ago, they relocated.

Last Thursday night, authorities in Gibson County arrived at the site following a 911 call that was purportedly placed by the suspect, 77-year-old Patrick Waite, the husband of Alma Waite. Officers discovered the suspect at the site and the three victims dead when they arrived.

Patrick Waite and Alma had been married for almost two years, according to recently made public court records. According to reports, Waite did not want the couple to have a divorce, which they had been contemplating. Waite allegedly told investigators prior to the killing that he had shot Alma because she had been angry with him and had started discussing home ownership. According to reports, he then shot additional people in the house after hearing them.

Waite acknowledged shooting Alma and her family, according to the authorities. At the time, four more people were inside the house, but none of them were hurt.

Three murder charges and one attempted murder charge have been brought against Waite. He is expected to return in late July after making an appearance in court on Monday.
