According to the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), a police chase resulted in a fatal two-car crash in Buckhead on Monday night.
The incident occurred near the intersection of Peachtree Road NE and Piedmont Road NE. The intersection was closed for several hours overnight as accident reconstruction crews investigated.
DeKalb County police said the incident began around 8:45 p.m., when officers responded to a robbery at a Chick-fil-A on Decatur Village Way. Police say the guy pepper-sprayed several employees and stole a cash drawer from the register before fleeing.
An Atlanta police officer saw the suspect vehicle shortly after and attempted to stop it, but it sped away.
The brief chase ended when the suspect vehicle ran a red light and collided with another vehicles, according to GSP. The medical examiner’s office identified the driver of the hit automobile as 26-year-old Richard O. Wells Jr. He died as a result of his injuries.
“I’m so sorry to hear that. It’s praying time because, so much is happening. It’s terrible,” Wilma Stroud, a Chick-fil-A customer, said on Tuesday.
The suspect, who has not been recognised, was taken to a hospital. Their current status and charges are unclear.
DeKalb County police claimed the suspect car was involved in three previous robberies, two in DeKalb County and one in Sandy Springs.
The investigation into the collision is now being led by the Georgia State Patrol.
