Every state has its fair share of towns with strange or funny names, but some cross into the downright lewd-sounding.
A recent map from Earthly Mission highlights the most risqué-sounding town names across America—and Iowa’s pick might surprise you.
Many would guess that Cumming, Iowa would top the list, given its name’s double entendre. But according to Earthly Mission, the title of Iowa’s most lewd-sounding town actually goes to Balltown.
What is Balltown Known For?
Despite what the name might suggest, Balltown is best known for its history—not its hilarity. The tiny town is home to Breitbach’s Country Dining, Iowa’s oldest restaurant.
Founded in 1852, the establishment has become a beloved landmark, surviving two devastating fires and continuing to serve up home-cooked meals to locals and tourists alike.
Other Inappropriately Amusing Iowa Town Names
While Balltown may have earned the top lewd-sounding honor, Iowa has no shortage of towns with names that raise eyebrows:
Cumming: Though it didn’t take the top spot, Cumming remains a fan favorite when it comes to suggestive town names. Founded in 1888, little is known about the origin of its name, but it’s certainly memorable.
Sac City: While it may cause a chuckle, the name actually has a historical root. It honors the Sac and Meskwaki Native American tribes who once occupied the area.
Today, Sac City is also home to a rather innocent claim to fame: the World’s Largest Popcorn Ball, which stands over eight feet tall and weighs over 9,000 pounds.
Beaver: Located near Beaver Creek, the town’s name comes from the surrounding geography—but that doesn’t stop it from being a source of endless puns.

And the weirdest name in Iowa?
When it comes to odd-sounding town names, the crown goes to What Cheer, Iowa. At first glance, the name might leave you confused—does it imply a lack of joy?
According to historians, the town was originally called Petersburg, but was renamed in the late 1800s. Though the exact origin of the phrase “What Cheer” remains unclear, it may have been a friendly greeting or exclamation used by early settlers.
Whether it’s Balltown, Cumming, or What Cheer, Iowa is full of towns with names that make people laugh, scratch their heads, or do a double-take. Just remember: behind every cheeky name, there’s a rich history—and sometimes, a giant popcorn ball.
