The nation will celebrate Juneteenth, a holiday honoring the abolition of slavery in the United States, this week.
The holiday, which is observed annually on June 19, has its origins on June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the emancipation of Black people following the end of the Civil War, two and a half years after Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
Known as America’s second Independence Day, the holiday was formally declared a federal holiday in 2021, according to the National Museum of African American History & Culture.
