CALERA

– Calera City Council Member Kay Snowden Turner has made the decision to pursue a third term. The certified municipal official has been serving the community since moving to Calera 15 years ago.

Turner has been committed to community and economic development throughout her first two terms on the council.

“I attended training for the Main Street Alabama program,” Turner said. “(It was) instrumental in organizing and supporting the achievement of Calera becoming a Main Street designated community.”

Some of Turner’s achievements on the council include requesting the extension of the council work session time, arguing for the necessity of the city attorney’s presence at council meetings and work sessions and requesting to livestream council meetings and work sessions, as well as meetings of the Planning Commission.

Increasing road safety throughout Calera is another issue Turner has devoted a significant amount of time to.

“(I) requested the installation of turn signals to the intersections of Highways 31 and 25 as well as Highway 31 and 17th Avenue,” Turner said. “Also, (I) pushed for improvements regarding traffic signals on Highway 31 and County Road 16, as well as Highway 70 and Highway 42. (I) proposed lighting for Exit 228.”

Being transparent with the community and allowing residents to voice their concerns is another motivating factor behind Turner’s reelection bid.”

“(I’m) committed to keeping the citizens of Calera informed about activities and initiatives that impact the community by way of social media platforms and inviting community participation in meetings and public hearings,” Turner said.

If reelected, Turner has five primary goals for the next term:

  • Continuous support for local businesses, improvements to our Main Street Downtown Historic District (architectural and landscaping) and

    upgrades for citywide infrastructure.
  • Stabilization of our water and sewer rates.
  • Promoting our city and increasing economic impact of Interstate 65.
  • Persistent backing of financial resources for improvements to our schools.
  • Ongoing assistance for our police and firefighters through funding to maintain proper staffing levels and equip them with essential training and tools to protect our community’s safety.

The Municipal Election is set to take place on Aug. 26. Calera residents will vote at the Roy Downs Memorial Calera Public Library, located at 9700 Highway 25.
