After being charged with killing a man while driving under the influence of alcohol on her way to school earlier this month, a Kentucky teacher is currently incarcerated.
According to a Lexington Police Department press release, Jamie Caldwell has been charged with driving while intoxicated and fleeing the scene of an accident.
On Thursday, May 1, the 29-year-old instructor appeared in court for the first time. She pled not guilty to the allegations and was granted bail.
According to the LPD, as part of her bail, Caldwell was placed under house arrest as police looked into the incident.
Officers were sent to the site of a hit-and-run on April 16 shortly before 7 a.m., according to the LPD’s announcement.
According to the announcement, the guy was taken to a local hospital for treatment after officers discovered him with potentially fatal injuries.
The man, identified as 32-year-old Joshua Hampton, died on April 18 from severe blunt force trauma injuries, a Fayette County Coroner’s Office spokesperson reported.
According to the LPD press release, officers then located the vehicle in a parking lot at Glendover Elementary, where Caldwell teaches, using the department’s real-time intelligence center.
Following that, Caldwell was admitted to the Fayette County Detention Center.
A representative for the Fayette County Public Schools said in a statement following her arrest that the district would not comment because of the pending investigation. According to the spokeswoman, Caldwell was put on administrative leave.
In the upcoming weeks, a grand jury will hear the case.
