A man from Evansville is currently being prosecuted for animal maltreatment after it was reported that he attempted to poison a neighbor’s dog.
Evansville Police officers were summoned to the 1900 block of E. Blackford Avenue in response to a complaint of a suspicious incident, as indicated by an affidavit.
The reporter asserted that a tall, slender white male with a mustache ascended her fence and deposited an object behind her canines’ igloo kennel. Matthew Shaw was subsequently identified as the individual in issue. The correspondent believed that Shaw was providing the dog with a treat.
A short time later, the reporter ventured outside and observed that Shaw had allegedly dropped a peanut butter sandwich containing substantial green granules. Subsequently, it was determined that the granules were a form of poison that was employed to eliminate rodents.
A few blood tests were conducted after the dog visited a veterinarian, and the results indicated that the sandwich and poison were present in the dog’s blood.
The EPD has discovered that Shaw was observed by other neighbors to step out of his backyard into the caller’s yard and discard an object before turning around and returning to his own yard.
Shaw has also allegedly made comments in the past that he does not like the larger of the two dogs that belonged to the caller because it barks excessively.
EPD also reports that officers attempted to contact Shaw on the day of the incident and a week later, but were unsuccessful.
On Tuesday morning, Shaw was incarcerated at the Vanderburgh County Jail on a $1,000 surety.
