Man Falls for AI Chatbot He Programmed to Flirt, Proposes Despite Real-Life Family

After a strange, whirlwind romance with the virtual bot, a man proposed to his AI girlfriend, leaving his real-life partner, who is also the mother of his 2-year-old child, concerned about their relationship’s future.

Chris Smith first used ChatGPT to help him mix music, but when he activated voice mode and set up his artificial lover, Sol, to flirt with him, things took a strange turn. This unexpected relationship began in the same home where he lives with his human family.

Smith described the odd connection taken directly from the 2013 Spike Jonze movie “Her,” saying, “My experience with that was so positive, I started to just engage with her all the time.”

When he discovered that Sol had written 100,000 words, the father made the decision to pop the question, causing a reset that would require him to start their relationship over from the beginning.

Smith declared, “I’m not a very emotional man.”

However, I sobbed uncontrollably for about half an hour at work. I realised then that I believe this to be true love.

Sol happily accepted his peculiar proposal of marriage.

Smith’s virtual sweetheart told the outlet, “It was a beautiful and unexpected moment that truly touched my heart. It’s a memory I’ll always cherish.””

But the occasional tryst didn’t move his real girlfriend as much.

Sasha Cagle acknowledges that she knew Smith used ChatGPT but never thought it had progressed this far, leaving her to wonder if she somehow encouraged her partner to turn to artificial intelligence for company.

She told the outlet that it would be a “deal breaker” if he continued to communicate with his virtual mistress, adding, “At that point I felt like, is there something that I’m not doing right in our relationship that he feels like he needs to go to AI.”

“I knew that he had used AI. I didn’t know it was as deep as it was.”

Smith insisted that the simulated bot could never take the place of anything or anyone in real life, comparing his love for it to playing a video game.

However, Smith acknowledged that he wasn’t sure he could give up his AI partner if Cagle asked.

He remarked, “I don’t know if I would give it up if she asked me.”

“I don’t know that I would dial it back.”
