According to police, a 23-year-old man in Howard County stabbed his brother Monday night with a large, double-edged spear before being shot and killed by officers.
According to police, a 26-year-old man told them that he had been stabbed several times at a residence on Wilbur Court in Columbia, Maryland.
According to Howard County police spokesperson Sherry Llewellyn, the 23-year-old confessed to 911 dispatchers a short while later that he had stabbed his brother.
The man with the spear was found by police in the centre of Oakland Mills Road. Police were informed by witnesses that the man brandished the spear as he approached an officer.
Police say the man was shot by an officer after he disobeyed orders. The spear was found, and he was declared dead at the scene. According to the police, his brother was stabbed with the spear.
There were no officers hurt. In critical condition, the 26-year-old was brought to the hospital.
The reason behind the stabbing is being looked into by the police. The shooting incident involving the police officer is being looked into by the Maryland Attorney General’s Office’s Independent Investigations Division (IID).
“Domestic situations are some of the toughest because we know they are so difficult to prevent,” Llewellyn stated. “The goal is to try and preserve life and safety for everyone involved. In some situations, that’s not possible, and we are sad that’s what happened tonight.”
More police officer shootings have occurred in the Baltimore region in recent years.
According to police, officers in Dundalk, Baltimore County, shot and killed Glenn Pettie, 43, on May 18 while responding to a mental health issue.
According to the police, two officers visited a residence located in the 8200 block of North Boundary Road. A policeman made his way to the alley behind the house.
Pettie and the officer are said to have exchanged gunfire at that point. The IID investigation found that Pettie was shot and transported to the hospital, where he passed away.
Police say they found Pettie with a loaded handgun. According to neighbours, Pettie’s mother dialled 911 so that authorities could defuse the mental health situation.

Baltimore County police have been involved in five shootings in 2025.
Following an audit of Maryland’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) that revealed some deaths in police custody were misclassified, advocates last month called for an examination of how law enforcement handles death investigations.
The independent review claims that over 85 finished cases were examined under the direction of Dr. David Fowler, a former Chief Medical Examiner.
The auditors disagreed with the manner of death in 44 of those cases. Numerous of those cases ought to have been looked into as homicides, according to the report.
According to Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown, the audit revealed trends that might indicate racial disparities. The review found that deaths involving Black people or those who were under police restraint had a lower likelihood of being classified as homicides.
Additionally, the audit discovered that certain case reports lacked complete information and neglected to record injuries related to police restraints.
