Following a chase, San Diego police fatally shot a man near Ocean Beach early on Saturday, according to authorities.
The 4700 block of Bermuda Avenue is where the shooting took place.
According to San Diego County Sheriff’s authorities on Saturday, at approximately 9:15 a.m., police were dispatched on a welfare check because of a male adult who was obstructing traffic on the 4400 block of Coronado Avenue by standing in the middle of the road.
A San Diego police officer requested more units to help communicate with the individual after hearing him make suicidal remarks.
Officers arrived and the suspect escaped in a black vehicle. The car collided with a black Jeep near Bermuda and Ebers Street while pursuing on OB’s surface streets.
According to a news statement from the sheriff’s office, the driver got out of the vehicle and approached the police while brandishing a knife. Despite efforts to defuse the situation by using “less lethal options,” an officer ultimately fired several bullets at the subject, striking him.
The victim was taken to a hospital by medics, where they declared him dead.
The man’s name has not been made public by law authorities, and no officers were hurt. Despite complaining of agony, the Jeep driver refused to be taken to the hospital. According to CBS8, a Mercedes Benz was the vehicle that collided with the Jeep.
In accordance with a 2022 memorandum of understanding to help avoid conflicts of interest within departments, detectives from the Sheriff’s homicide section are looking into the officer-involved shooting.
To ascertain the circumstances and reason behind the shooting, detectives are looking for additional information.
