A man was killed and two others were hospitalized Monday morning during a multi-county police chase that ended in a three-vehicle crash on Indianapolis’ east side.
Indiana State Police are investigating a crash involving at least three law enforcement agencies, including ISP, that occurred while chasing the fleeing car.
The chase ended just over 41 miles later at the crossroads of Washington Street and Miffhoefer Road, when the fleeing vehicle collided with a Ford Mustang and a BMW.
The Marion County Coroner’s Office identified the driver as Dewuan L. Hampton, 33, and described the cause and manner of death as a “motor vehicle accident/police pursuit.”
At 9:15 p.m. on Monday, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop a maroon Dodge Durango on State Road 3 near Indiana Avenue in New Castle. The driver sped away, prompting a chase on I-70 westbound through Hancock County and into Marion County.
The SUV exited I-70 and traveled north on Post Road before returning south to the crossroads of Washington Street and Miffhoefer Road. The Durango was traveling southbound on Mitthoeffer when it collided with a blue Ford Mustang and then a white BMW.
The Durango flipped several times before coming to a halt south of the crossroads, upside down. Hampton was catapulted from the car and pronounced dead on the scene.
Three other Durango occupants were transported to other hospitals.
The driver of the Mustang was sent to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the BMW sustained minor injuries and was treated and released on the site. Several guns were discovered and thought to have fallen out of the Durango during the crash.
According to Indiana State Police, the circumstances surrounding the pursuit and crash are being investigated. Officials have not stated what caused the initial traffic stop.
No arrests have been made, and two of the Durango residents remain hospitalized.
