Man Previously Accused in Hate Crimes Arrested for Allegedly Attacking Muslim Woman on NYC Subway

Four years after being busted for a series of hate crimes against Muslims, a brute was apprehended this week for allegedly attacking a second Muslim woman on a Queens train and severely beating her, breaking her nose, according to police and prosecutors.

Around 4 a.m. on Wednesday, Naved Durrni, 34, rushed up to the 55-year-old woman wearing a hijab on a Jamaica-bound E train as it passed through the 75th Avenue station and yelled, “Where are you from? According to a criminal complaint, “Are you Muslim?”

According to court documents, Durrni repeatedly punched and slapped the victim in the face, head, and neck region, and even kicked her in the face after she replied that she was, in fact, Muslim.

According to the complaint, the victim received treatment at a nearby hospital for bruising, swelling, and fractures to her orbital and nasal bones.

Police and the court document state that the attacker, who was wearing a black Mets cap, a black du-rag, a black jacket over a red collared shirt, black pants with a white belt, and black Timberland work boots, fled but was apprehended a short distance away.

At his arraignment on Thursday morning, Judge Michael Katz charged him with hate crime assault and aggravated harassment and ordered him to be held without bail.

According to authorities, Durrni is no stranger to the criminal justice system; he has been arrested six times before, including for his unsettling history of randomly attacking Muslim victims in Queens in June and July of 2021.

According to the Queens DA’s office at the time, he allegedly targeted a couple strolling along Liberty Avenue and Lefferts Boulevard in one instance, punching a 31-year-old man and yanking on the 24-year-old woman’s hijab.

Prosecutors claimed that he also grabbed a box the woman was carrying and growled, “Mohammed was a liar.”

He approached another couple on Inwood Street and yelled the same anti-Mohammed remark before punching a 56-year-old woman in the face and head, breaking her nose, according to the DA’s office.

Subsequently, prosecutors claimed that he swore that “Jesus tells the truth” and that “Mohammad was a liar” when he allegedly ran a 38-year-old woman into the street on Sutphin Boulevard close to 94th Avenue.

According to the DA’s office, Durrni allegedly took out a knife and pointed it at the victim when she attempted to dial 911 on her cell phone.

At first, a psychiatric evaluation was required before he could be released on bail.

It was not immediately clear why he was released after the hate crime spree, but according to prosecutors, he was found guilty of second-degree aggravated harassment in 2022.

On Monday, he will make another court appearance in relation to the new case.
