On Friday, a Houston police officer shot a guy in the Spring Branch neighbourhood, killing him.
The incident occurred after the suspect threatened officers with a baseball bat and a piece of concrete, according to Houston Police Department Assistant Chief Yasar Bashir.
According to Bashir, it all started at approximately 8:30 a.m. on Friday when a security guard reported to the police that a man brandishing a baseball bat had charged at him. The man was tasered by the security, but it did nothing. After that, the suspect fled the scene.
After arriving, officers took a report and started searching for the individual, but they were unsuccessful.
The same guard observed the man later and phoned the police once more. When police arrived just after 3 p.m., they discovered the man at a strip centre on Wirt Road, allegedly still brandishing a bat.
Bashir said that once the officers exited their vehicle, the subject turned hostile. In both Spanish and English, the officers repeatedly told the man to drop the bat.
Bashir claimed that at one point the suspect used the bat to threaten the officers. Bashir claimed that the man was unaffected by the two officers’ taser shots.
After crossing Hammerly Boulevard, the man allegedly saw a piece of concrete on the ground, picked it up, and threatened the officers with it, according to Bashir.
Bashir claimed that at this point, the victim was shot twice by one of the officers. The individual was given assistance, but he passed away right away.
It is thought that the deceased man was in his fifties. Bashir thinks that because he was wearing a bulky jacket, the tasers had no effect on him.
“This is a very sad event, we are going to make sure this incident is investigated thoroughly,” Bashir said.
Bashir claims that the cop who discharged his firearm has three years of HPD experience. Until the investigation’s conclusion, he will be put on administrative responsibilities.
Bashir added that the incident’s body cam footage would be made public in 30 days.
