Authorities say a suspect was shot by Chicago police after he allegedly struck an officer with his car while trying to escape the scene of a shooting on the Northwest Side, and he is currently recuperating in the hospital on Saturday.
Officers were summoned to the scene of a battery in progress and gunfire at a shop in the 3100 block of North Central Avenue in Belmont Cragin around 2:10 a.m. on Saturday, according to the police.
An employee of the company led police to the man they thought had shot the gun as he was boarding a red pickup vehicle close by after the police got on the scene.
The man was contacted by officers who told him to get out of the vehicle, but he allegedly refused and drove at them, colliding with one of them. The suspect behind the wheel, a 28-year-old guy, allegedly kept driving after police opened fire on the car.
The car was later located by authorities in the 3200 block of North Menard Avenue, a short distance from the scene.
Police saw the suspect, who had been shot, lying on the ground close to the vehicle as they drew closer.
Before Chicago Fire Department EMS arrived on the scene and transported the suspect to the hospital, where he was classified in serious condition, officers provided him with medical assistance.
Officers reportedly found a gun in the suspect’s vehicle after the incident.
The man reportedly involved in the event has not yet been identified by authorities, nor have they filed any charges against him.
The condition of the officer struck by the truck during the original stop was not updated by the authorities.
Chicago’s Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) and CPD’s Investigative Response Team are currently conducting investigations into the shooting.
For 30 days, the cop or police engaged in the incident will be assigned to standard administrative tasks.
