Everett McElrath Jr. was taken into custody by Rockford Police on charges of unlawfully having a weapon and causing damage to a squad car.
Officers observed a Chevy Malibu in the 3400 block of Aburn Street on April 28 at approximately 8:00 p.m. that was not using its turn signal. According to court documents, when police pulled over the car in the 1500 block of Evergreen Street, they smelled raw cannabis.
When authorities searched the truck, they discovered ammunition and a loaded black and gold handgun.
According to court documents, McElrath intentionally struck the side of a squad car with his head when he was being taken into custody.

McElrath faces three counts of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon in a vehicle, aggravated unlawful possession of a loaded weapon in a vehicle without a FOID, criminal damage to government property, and illegal possession of ammunition without a FOID.
The following day, the judge granted him pretrial release.
