Man with criminal history shot dead while waving fake gun in Orlando

A man with a “simulated gun” was shot and killed by Orlando police officers on Thursday in a popular commercial area near an apartment complex, according to authorities.

The fatal shooting took place in the 4600 block of Cason Cove Drive, near the Bella Vita apartments.

During a press conference later that evening, Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith said officers got reports about 5:45 p.m. reporting an armed individual around 4500 Conroy Road.

“He walked into the dry cleaners with a gun in his hand. He walked to the 7-Eleven with a gun in his hand and was waving it around,” Smith stated. “He then walked through the strip mall, pulled up to the parking lot with the gun openly out in his hand.”

When officers arrived at the site, they discovered the man in the parking lot of the Bella Vita Apartments complex, Smith explained.

Despite multiple requests to drop his apparent firearm, the man refused, and five police shot him, Smith said.

“The suspect has now been pronounced deceased. The gun in the suspect’s possession was recovered,” Smith said at the news conference.

According to Smith, the gun was actually a “simulated firearm” designed to resemble a Glock handgun.

“It’s either a BB or pellet gun or just a simulated gun, so it looks just like a real gun,” Smith said.

The individual who died has been named as Orlin Manuel Bueso Calderon, age 25.

Calderon, according to investigators, had a criminal past that included numerous drug and traffic crimes, as well as aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer with a lethal weapon and cocaine possession.

There were no officers wounded during the confrontation.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will look into the officer-involved shooting.
