Math teacher dies after high-speed chase ends in deadly crash in Oakland

After a California Highway Patrol high-speed pursuit in Oakland on Wednesday night, a teacher from the Oakland Unified School District was killed and another person was hurt in a collision. The incident happened just before 7:45 p.m. in the vicinity of 12th Avenue and East 21st Street, and the Oakland Police Department tells KRON4 that it is looking into it.

According to OPD, they were alerted by a CHP air unit that they were chasing the car in Oakland. According to the OPD, CHP patrol officers briefly chased the car before giving up.

However, the car kept driving carelessly and made its way to the vicinity of the San Antonio Recreation Area, which is located at the intersection of 12th Avenue and East 21st. After losing control of the car, the driver crashed into two people on the sidewalk and a fire hydrant.

At that moment, the suspect exited the car and fled, but CHP officers apprehended him.

The defendant, identified by CHP as 18-year-old Oakland resident Eric Scott Hernandez-Garcia, was arrested on multiple criminal charges and taken to Santa Rita Jail.

OPD police found a man and a woman with serious injuries laying on the ground when they arrived at the scene. At the scene, the man passed away. After being taken to the hospital, the woman was declared stable by the medical staff.

According to OPD, both victims were in their 40s and lived in Oakland. The deceased man was identified as Marvin Boomer, a math teacher at Castlemont High School, by a board member of the Oakland Unified School District.

At the crash site, a memorial is being built, and on Friday, May 30, there will be a vigil.

According to police, the investigation is still underway and there is no indication that alcohol or drugs were a contributing factor in the collision.
