In a recall notice published by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Midea stated that water can collect in the appliance manufacturer’s U Window Air Conditioner and U+ Window Air Conditioner units, potentially resulting in the formation of mold. Mold can lead to illnesses and respiratory problems.
The advisory states that the CPSC has received at least 152 consumer reports of mold growth in the Midea air conditioners.
Of them, 17 people have reported that mold exposure has caused them to have sore throats, cough and sneeze, respiratory infections, or allergic responses.
Nearly 46,000 units were sold in Canada in addition to the ones sold in the United States.
According to the recall notice, the Midea products were marketed under several brand names, such as Comfort Aire, Danby, Frigidaire, Insignia, Keystone, LBG Products, Mr. Cool, Perfect Aire, and Sea Breeze.
(See the complete list of affected model numbers.) A variety of makes and models that are 22 inches wide by 14 inches high are being recalled.
