Officials have disclosed the names of the two people killed in a car accident in Channelview.
The two victims were Crystal Njepu, the 39-year-old driver, and her infant daughter, Anna Njepu.
The collision occurred late in the afternoon on Friday, April 25. Crystal was travelling around the 17300 block of Market Street.
Crystal apparently encountered a medical problem, prompting her to exit the road and turn down a dirt path on the south side.
The vehicle came to a sudden halt for nearly a minute. Moments later, it rushed forward into a grassy area, then into the ocean. The car began to sink quickly and was swept by the current beneath a nearby bridge.
A witness who stopped to aid entered the water and broke the vehicle’s back window. This brave gesture allowed the witness to rescue the front passenger and the back left passenger from the vehicle, both of whom were children aged five to seven.
Unfortunately, when emergency medical services came, the driver was discovered to be unresponsive and showing no signs of life.
During the vehicle’s evacuation from the water, Anna was located in the back right passenger seat, with no visible signs of life.
The case is still active and being investigated by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office’s Vehicular Crimes Division.
