For millions of Americans, a big shift is coming: starting on May 7, the Real ID requirement will be implemented nationwide and will be necessary for access to federal buildings and domestic air travel.
This program seeks to improve identity verification and security and is based on post-9/11 legislation. Genuine IDs must adhere to stringent federal requirements and are distinguished by a gold star in the top left corner.
States will not, however, implement the provision uniformly. Residents of five U.S. states—Washington, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, and Vermont—will be able to avoid getting a Real ID if they already hold an improved driver’s license.
An improved driver’s license is accepted in which states?
According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the following states have developed upgraded driver’s licenses that are consistent with federal guidelines:
Vermont, New York, Minnesota, Michigan, and Washington. These documents provide an alternate route to compliance and will be accepted for access to federal facilities and domestic flights.
Residents of other states will need to present a Real ID or another document that has been approved by the federal government.
Among those recognized by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) are a valid passport, a U.S. commercial mariner credential, a U.S. permanent resident card, a border crossing card, or a provincial driver’s license from Canada.
How to apply if you need a real ID?
The procedure is simple if your state does not provide an improved license or if you would rather apply for a Real ID. To begin the online application process and see the complete list of required documents, go to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) website in your state.
Typically, you will have to supply:
- Evidence of birthdate, full legal name, and Social Security number
- Two records attesting to the state’s residency
- Evidence of legal status in the United States.

The DHS website offers a Real ID lookup tool to check state-specific criteria and locate the closest DMV for extra assistance.
