A Volusia County sheriff’s deputy, who was off-duty, was taken into custody on Saturday night for operating a motorcycle with a counterfeit license plate and has subsequently stepped down from their position, according to officials.
In a recent incident, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office reported the arrest of 26-year-old Erica Muzzy along Interstate 4, where she faced charges for possessing a counterfeit license plate.
Late Saturday night, just after 11 p.m., Muzzy was observed riding a motorbike on I-4 West in Deltona, with a tag that was flipped up and not visible, according to deputies. When turned over, the label allegedly displayed “CHASEM3.”
Muzzy was stopped by law enforcement and subsequently taken to the Volusia County jail, where a bond of $2,500 was set.
Before the traffic stop, deputies reported that Muzzy was involved in an incident shortly before 9 p.m. in Deltona.
A deputy from the sheriff’s office observed a motorbike rider at a Wawa on Howland Boulevard who had evaded an attempted traffic stop earlier that Saturday evening.
During the detention, the rider shouted to Muzzy, who was with his fellow riders, and engaged in a heated exchange with the constable overseeing the investigation.
A motorcyclist has been taken into custody for allegedly fleeing from law enforcement officials. The individual’s identity has yet to be disclosed.
Following his arrest, deputies reported that Muzzy opted to depart the Wawa on her motorbike, which had a counterfeit tag, rather than arranging for it to be towed or securing a ride home.
After Muzzy’s arrest, the sheriff’s office reported discovering a social media account linked to her that displayed dangerous stunt riding on public roads.
Officials are currently examining that conduct as a component of an internal inquiry.
Muzzy, who had been serving as a constable since 2021, recently held a position in District 2, encompassing DeLand and northwest Volusia, before her resignation.
Muzzy faced a judge during a court session on Sunday morning and has now been released on bond.
As of Sunday afternoon, there was still no scheduled date for her next court hearing.
