Officer shoots armed woman on freeway, traffic backs up before holiday weekend in Chino Hills

Following an officer-involved gunshot in Chino Hills on Friday, all northbound lanes of the 71 Freeway were closed and a lady was taken to the hospital.

Officers were called to the scene at approximately 11:30 a.m. by the California Highway Patrol after receiving reports of a woman carrying a knife strolling down the right shoulder of the freeway north of Butterfield Ranch Road and Euclid Avenue.

The woman was carrying what CHP referred to as a “large knife” when the first officer arrived.

According to Captain Salvador Suarez, “an officer-involved shooting occurred during that encounter when she advanced toward our officer.”

After being hit by a single gunshot wound, the woman was sent to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Suarez stated that although they were unable to verify whether the woman was drunk, they had heard rumors that she had been acting strangely. He went on to say, “We will be looking into it.”

On Friday afternoon, officials did not immediately know the woman’s age or identify. There were no injuries to the cop who was shot.

All northbound lanes were still blocked as of 5 p.m., with the exception of the HOV lane.

CHP stated that it hopes all lanes may reopen quickly because traffic is already backing up for both Memorial Day Weekend and rush hour.
