Over 70 Roads Closed in Ohio as Rainfall nears 5 inches in some areas

On Sunday, the rain slowed down in most of central Ohio. However, water levels are still high, and more rain, possibly snow, is still in the short-term forecast.

According to the National Weather Service, it had rained about 3.5 inches in Columbus over the past seven days as of Sunday morning. The most rain that fell in Franklin County was 1.57 inches in Grove City and just over 4 inches in Upper Arlington. With 4.82 inches, Galena got the most rain in the area.

As of late Friday afternoon, about 70 roads across Ohio were closed because of the rain, which led to flood watches, warnings, and recommendations.

On Sunday afternoon, a spokeswoman for the Columbus Department of Public Utilities said that the city’s sewer maintenance operations center had gotten about 200 calls from people who had problems with their basements flooding, streets flooding, storm drains getting clogged, and other problems caused by the rain. Most of the calls came from a part of Columbus that is east of the Olentangy River and north of I-670.

Because of the rain, the Franklinton floodwall was raised and floodgates were put up on Greenlawn and Harmon streets just before 1 p.m. Saturday. The wall was taken down early Sunday night.

The National Weather Service says that by 9:15 a.m. Sunday, the Scioto had risen to 22.39 feet at Frank Road. At 2 p.m., it was at 22.1 feet, and by 2 a.m. Tuesday, it was predicted to drop below 16 feet, which is not a flood level in that area.
