Phoenix temps to soar to 105° by Mother’s Day weekend; light showers possible tonight

A few persistent showers are possible this morning, mostly to the west of the Valley. The higher ground northeast of Phoenix may see a few additional showers today.

Today and tonight, the jet stream disturbance that has been causing the showers and colder temperatures will continue to move eastward. A ridge of high pressure is expected to begin forming by tomorrow, bringing temperatures into the mid-90s.

The heat will increase as the high-pressure ridge gets stronger. High temperatures are expected to reach the triple digits by Friday.

Because of the Valley’s moderate to high danger of heat, we have declared Saturday and Sunday First Alert Weather Days. By Saturday afternoon, high temperatures will be close to 105 degrees. It might be one of the warmest Saturday nights in a long time.

Most of the Valley is expected to see lows in the 70s Saturday night and early Sunday morning, with Phoenix seeing lows of about 80!

The Mother’s Day present that Mom was hoping for was not the Sunday high temps. Highs on Sunday are probably going to reach close to 105 degrees, continuing the trend from Saturday. Monday was not particularly warm, with highs close to 100, and Tuesday was a little colder, with highs in the mid-90s.

Next week, when a disturbance attempts to move into the region, the cooling trend and occasional breezes might persist.

There may be showers and thunderstorms in the high country today, with gusty winds anticipated in places that do receive them. Tomorrow is expected to be mostly sunny and warmer as the high country experiences a respite from the storms and rain.

For most of northern Arizona, Friday is likewise predicted to be dry, with a 20% chance of showers on Saturday. As a disturbance attempts to move through the area, Sunday appears to be largely dry, followed by Monday’s somewhat colder temperatures and breezes.
