Coca-Cola issued a recall after discovering germs that could be harmful to those with compromised immune systems, raising concerns that some Topo Chico bottles might contain substances other than minerals.
Costco customers received an early recall notice from Coca-Cola on Monday, alerting them to the possibility of Pseudomonas aeruginosa contamination in some packs of Topo Chico Mineral Water.
It stated in the letter that the cases were sold in warehouses located in Texas and Louisiana.
According to the letter sent to Costco customers who bought the goods, there is a “very low” danger of the bacterium harming the public’s health. Consuming impacted products, however, may have mild health effects for people with weakened immune systems.
According to a Coca-Cola representative, the impacted Topo Chico bottles have been taken off store shelves and are no longer for sale. Retail locations in five states were affected, according to the statement.
“The quality and safety of our products is our top priority,” according to the statement. “Due to a potential contamination of pseudomonas we have voluntarily recalled a limited quantity of Topo Chico Mineral Water 16.9oz glass bottle products. All impacted product has been removed from store shelves at the approximate 40 retail locations across Arizona, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, and Texas, and no illnesses have been reported.”
In its letter to consumers, Coca-Cola identified the bacteria as Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Pseudomonas aeruginosa: what is it?
The company’s notification states that mineral water and other water sources naturally contain Pseudomonas.
The bacteria are most frequently found in healthcare environments, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Additionally, the agency warns that after surgery, the bacteria may cause infections that impact the urinary tract, lungs, blood, and other areas of the body.
Patients in healthcare settings are the people most at danger, especially those who are:
- On ventilators and other breathing support devices
- Using catheters and other medical devices
- recuperating from surgery or suffering from burns or open wounds
