Potential Closure of Flint-Genesee Job Corps Could Disrupt Youth Employment Programs

Due to impending federal budget cuts, the Flint-Genesee County Job Corps may shut, which could affect employment prospects for young people in the area.

Job Corps student and volunteer medical assistant Stansionna Jones highlighted the significance of the program.

“I’m glad that they picked me to be a volunteer here because it can show me how I will really work in a hospital,” Jones stated.

Through the Hurley Foundation’s collaboration with the Job Corps, Jones obtains practical experience by assisting patients and doing front desk responsibilities.

Underprivileged adolescents can participate in the program’s career training, which includes six weeks of job training from partners including Hurley Medical Center.

“We’ve had at least five placements into jobs, into full-time jobs,” Hurley Foundation President Karima Amlani stated.

Amlani cautioned that the initiative may be discontinued by 2026 due to federal budget cuts, which would have an impact on collaborations and job placements.

“We really value that our friends from Job Corps can come here and that we can have this work together,” Amlani stated.

Tapology’s founder, Bruce Bradley, emphasized the program’s importance for nearby companies.

“Our relationship with Job Corps has been essential. They provide us with the skills and the workforce,” Bradley stated.

Bradley voiced concerns about cutting off essential services for youth looking for direction and opportunity.

“If you dismantle the very mechanisms that provide people with skills and opportunity… this is a direct betrayal,” Bradley stated.

To ensure ongoing funding, the National Job Corps Association asks supporters to get in touch with politicians by Friday, May 30.
