Pothole stops 111 mph pursuit in Austintown; driver escapes, passenger caught

A high-speed police chase came to an unexpected halt Tuesday when the suspect’s vehicle struck a pothole.

According to WKBN, the Ohio State Highway Patrol initiated the pursuit after attempting a traffic stop on I-680 near Austintown around midnight. The suspect refused to stop, accelerating to speeds of up to 111 mph.

The chase lasted approximately five minutes before the suspect hit a pothole, causing the vehicle to lose a front tire.

Following the crash, both the driver and a passenger fled the scene on foot. Authorities were able to apprehend the passenger, but the driver remains on the run.
