Reckless car takeover in Santa Ana parking lot draws over 150 vehicles

Over 150 automobiles gathered in the parking lot of an Orange County shopping complex for what police described as a “reckless driving takeover,” officials said Monday.

As a result, at least one person was apprehended, and the incident was captured on video.

The Santa Ana Police Department said patrol officers responded to the takeover, which occurred on Sunday night at the Centre On Seventeenth, a mall located at 17th Street and Tustin Avenue.

Officers came to find a large crowd in the parking lot and started forcing drivers to leave.

The police did not specify when time the gathering began, although the body camera footage was captured about 10:48 p.m.

“After multiple commands to leave, one driver began doing ‘donuts’ in the parking lot,” detailed Santa Ana PD’s post to X. “That driver was detained, issued a ticket for reckless driving and driving without a license, and his vehicle was impounded…not a cheap consequence.”

While authorities were arresting the offender, other drivers involved in the takeover can be heard yelling and hollering from a distance on the body camera footage.

Police did not immediately release the suspect’s identity.

“Santa Ana PD has zero tolerance for reckless driving and street racing,” the police stated.

As of 8 p.m. on Monday, no more arrests had been reported during this event.
