Getting their names in the record books is something that athletes aim for.

AL.com users chose Courtney Strain’s (now Courtney Screws) single-season scoring mark as the most unbreakable record in AHSAA girls basketball history.
The former Woodland High School standout finished the 2007–08 academic year with 1,261 points, capping off an amazing prep career.

She received 31% of the fan vote for her single-season scoring record, followed by records for the most free throws attempted in a game (46 by Geraldine’s Kristen White, 2009–10) and career steals (1,084), both of which received 18% of the vote.
She is one of three players with 1,100 points in a season and the only one to score more than 1,200 points in a single season, according to the AHSAA record book. Other notables include former West Morgan standout Hayden Hamby (1,170 in 2011–12) and former Eufaula star Gwen Jackson (1,112 in 1998–99); Screws also finished the 2008–09 season with 1,112 points, surpassing 1,100 points.
LaTascya Duff, a former Samson athlete, finished the 2017–18 season with 1,020 points, making her the most recent player to reach 1,000 points in a season. She later transferred to New Mexico after playing at Shelton State.
She had at least three 50-point games in the 2007–08 season, including 52 against White Plains and 51 against Westbrook, with 53 against Handley.
Along with career points (5,283), single-season scoring average (40.7 points per game), field goals attempted in a game (51), field goals attempted in a season (952), and field goals made in a season (474), Screws holds six records, including her single-season scoring mark.
In addition, she tied for eighth place for the most points scored in a single game with 57 versus Clay County during the 2006–07 season and is second in the number of free throws attempted in a season (407).
She received three Alabama Sports Writers Association Class 2A Player of the Year awards throughout her career and was named to the all-state team five times. In addition, Screws received two ASWA Fab Five honors and was chosen MVP of the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game.
At Woodland, she was a varsity cheerleader and played volleyball in addition to her prowess on the basketball court.
Screws had an extremely successful career at Woodland before joining Auburn, where she scored 127 points in 46 games over three seasons from 2010 to 2013.
For the last two seasons of her college career, she would transfer to Jacksonville State University, where she started 44 of her 57 games. In her last season with the Gamecocks, she averaged 7.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game.
Screws made four 3-pointers and finished with a career-high 18 points against UT-Martin on January 16, 2016.
The former Woodland standout would later become a coach at Handley High School, where she guided the team to a successful eight-year run that included six regional berths and four area titles.
