Reno, NV — A tragic mass shooting at the Grand Sierra Resort casino in Reno on Monday has now claimed four lives, including that of the suspected gunman, 26-year-old Dakota Hawver, a Reno resident. The shooting began around 7:30 a.m. and left three others injured, including two who remain in critical condition, according to authorities.
Suspect Fired 80 Rounds Before Being Shot by Police
Reno Police Chief Kathryn Nance and Sparks Police Chief Chris Crawforth shared new details of the incident during a press briefing. According to Crawforth, Hawver initially attempted to fire at a group of bystanders in the valet area, but his 9mm handgun malfunctioned. Once operational, he fired multiple rounds, striking five individuals.
- One victim died at the scene, another died at a hospital.
- Two victims remain hospitalized in critical condition.
- A fifth victim has been released from treatment.
Crawforth added that Hawver continued moving north through the parking lot where he fired at a casino security guard, who returned fire. The suspect then shot a sixth victim driving through the lot, who also died at the scene.
Deadly Confrontation with Police Ends in Suspect’s Death
Responding officers quickly located the suspect on the northwest side of the property, where Hawver reportedly exchanged gunfire with law enforcement. He was shot by officers and hospitalized in critical condition, but died on Thursday, according to Sparks police.
- Hawver was carrying multiple magazines and is believed to have fired around 80 shots.
- He had legally purchased the handgun two years ago and recently bought the ammunition.
- Police confirmed he had no criminal or mental health history.
At least one officer suffered minor injuries from glass fragments, and a patrol vehicle was struck by bullets, Chief Nance confirmed.
Victims Identified; No Connection to Gunman Found
Sparks police have identified three of the victims killed in the attack:
- Andrew Canepa, a Southern California restaurant co-owner and father.
- Justin Aguila, 23, of Southern California.
- Angel Martinez, 66, of the Reno-Sparks area.
There is currently no known connection between Hawver and the victims, and the motive remains unclear.

Reno City Councilmember Devon Reese stated, “My heart breaks for the victims, their families, and our entire community. Reno is strong — but we are not immune to the epidemic of gun violence gripping this nation.”
Grand Sierra Resort officials thanked their security team and first responders, confirming that no employees were injured in the incident. “We are heartbroken by the senseless violence,” the resort said in a statement.
