Repeat traffic offender crashes during Columbia police chase, released hours later on bond

According to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, a guy was recently taken into custody after leading deputies on a high-speed pursuit in Columbia that resulted in an accident. The sheriff’s office revealed in a news release on Monday that the driver, 30-year-old Jacobi Green, has prior convictions for felony traffic offences involving a death.

According to the announcement, Green was charged on April 3 with reckless driving, driving under suspension, failing to stop for sirens and blue lights, and simple possession of marijuana.

According to the sheriff’s department, the arrest followed a pursuit that started when a deputy attempted to stop a car on South Highland Forest Drive. That is in the vicinity of U.S. 21/Wilson Boulevard and U.S. 321 in Columbia.

According to the release, the car drove off at a fast pace after the driver, who was later identified as Green, disregarded the attempted traffic stop. According to the sheriff’s department, Green lost control of the car due to speed and collided with a utility pole after almost hitting another car on the nearby Wilmette Road.

According to the announcement, Green fled the collision but was apprehended by authorities.

According to the sheriff’s department, this pursuit took place almost four years after Green was involved in a fatal collision.

According to the release, Green was charged by the South Carolina Highway Patrol with felony DUI (resulting in death), hit-and-run (resulting in death), and resisting arrest on May 7, 2021, while the sheriff’s department charged him with possession with intent to distribute marijuana and failure to stop for blue lights and siren.

According to the sheriff’s department, a deputy attempted to stop a car that was speeding and acting recklessly on Fairfield Road. According to the announcement, the vehicle leading the pursuit struck a victim riding a dirt bike and continued to drive while the constable was pursuing.

According to the announcement, Green finally lost control of the car and collided into a ditch. The man, who was later identified as Michael Thomas by the Richland County Coroner’s Office, passed away at the scene, according to the sheriff’s department.

According to the Bostick Tompkins Funeral Home, Thomas celebrated his 16th birthday on May 3rd, just days before the fatal crash.

According to the sheriff’s department, Green entered a guilty plea to hit-and-run (leading in death) on September 26, 2022, after the Highway Patrol looked into the crash. He was given a sentence of five years suspended to time served (507 days) and two years of probation.

According to the release, Green was freed on a $2500 surety bond approximately ten hours after his most recent arrest, which occurred during the April 2025 chase.
