Almost 500 Rite Aid locations are poised to shut down across the country, with 20 of those in Oregon, as the pharmacy chain faces its second bankruptcy.
The well-known pharmacy retailer sought Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May amid ongoing financial difficulties. The number of Rite Aid stores shutting down has consistently increased, approaching a total of 500 locations.
The company had earlier sought bankruptcy protection in 2023 and reduced its footprint from more than 2,300 locations to roughly 1,200.
Documents from the court proceedings related to the bankruptcy disclosed that Rite Aid had originally intended to shut down 47 locations. Recent updates have significantly broadened the scope, initially listing 68 stores across seven states, followed by the addition of 95 locations, then 151 more stores, and now revealing an additional 111 in a recent filing.
The organisation revealed in its bankruptcy statement that it intends to maintain store operations for the upcoming months; however, it will not be acquiring new stock, which means that empty shelves are expected to become increasingly prevalent, according to the Associated Press.
