Even after three years have passed since their son Steven Paul Colon was shot and murdered in what the authorities have determined to be a case of self-defense, the family of Steven Paul Colon continues to want justice.
This past week, dozens of people gathered on Cattleman Road, holding placards that said “We are Steven’s voice” and “Justice delayed is justice denied.”
As members of Steven Paul’s family and friends demonstrated against what they perceived to be a lack of responsibility, their cries demanded that justice be served for Steven Paul.
“As soon as I stepped over here and saw these signs, I couldn’t believe this is real life,” Juliet Colon, Steven’s sister stated. “I can’t believe he is gone… it is really scary.”
The incident of shooting took place in September of 2022. Colon was strolling in his neighborhood in Osprey when he got into a conflict with a man who was walking his dog, as stated in a complaint filed by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
Colon was shot in the chest by the man after the debate turned into a physical struggle between the two of them.

He had only 22 years of age.
“My son was a brilliant kid. He had a bright future,” Paola Colon, Steven’s mother stated. “This is not fair. His life was taken from him and there has been nothing done to protect him.”
Under the Stand Your Ground law in Florida, the gunman asserted that he was acting in self-defense. The assessment was accepted by the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, and there were never any charges brought against the individual.
Following the passage of three years, the Colon family has announced that they have obtained fresh evidence, and they are requesting that the case be reopened.
There was an attempt made by SNN to contact the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office. According to a statement, they wrote:
“We have been provided information by the Colon family, and we are currently reviewing the documents.”

The family has high expectations that the circumstances surrounding Steven’s death will be reexamined and that justice will be eventually carried out as a result of the resumed investigation.
“I am fearful every day of my life that the killer is still out there,” Juliet Colon stated. “I have anxiety every night, every day.”
