Real ID was formally became a requirement for visiting federal buildings and flying within the United States on May 7, 2025.
The problem is that because it demands documentation of residency and legal status, which millions of undocumented immigrants understandably lack, they are unable to apply for it lawfully. Don’t panic, though; that doesn’t mean you have no other choices.
It’s crucial to be aware of the legitimate and lawful options available to you in order to move across the nation without any issues and to prevent any problems, delays, or fines.
As always, we’re here to walk you through the process of what to do if you don’t have a legitimate ID, what documents the TSA does accept, and how to go about your daily life without having this impede you further.
What occurs if you lack a legitimate ID?
Let’s start from the beginning: despite their similar appearance, real ID is not simply any driver’s license. However, this document goes one step farther and satisfies more stringent government requirements.
After the 9/11 attacks, it was authorised in 2005, but it wasn’t until May 2025 that it became required. Adults will now be required to present one in order to board a domestic flight or enter a federal facility.
How can you tell? In the top-right corner, there is a star. That star indicates that it satisfies the federal government’s standards.
What if you don’t have any documents?
You can’t apply for one then. People without legal status are regrettably excluded from obtaining a Real ID, which requires establishing your presence in the nation lawfully and providing further papers. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t travel within the United States or even identify yourself.

If you are unable to obtain a legitimate ID, what other options are there?
Many states offer special IDs or licenses that you can use locally for driving, identifying yourself to the police, or completing specific paperwork, even though they aren’t valid for flying or visiting government facilities.
Because every state has different regulations, it’s a good idea to find out what’s accessible in your area.
Have to take a flight? Other documents are accepted by TSA
Other legitimate forms of identification are accepted by the TSA if you must travel within the United States but lack a real ID:
- A current passport from your nation of origin
- An improved driver’s license or ID (available only in some jurisdictions; confirm that the states you are travelling between accept it)
- A USCIS-issued Employment Authorisation Document (EAD)
However, you should arrive at the airport early because you will likely have to go through more extensive security procedures. You’ll be there for a long time.

Things you should never do
If you don’t have a legitimate ID, don’t freak out. Someone can’t infer you’re in the country illegally just because you don’t have this document.
Actually, it is illegal for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to discriminate against someone or enquire about their immigration status based on the fact that they do not have a Real ID.
Above all, avoid attempting to obtain a real ID by falsifying documents, using phoney documentation, or providing incorrect information.
You risk getting into major legal issues if you do this. Adhere to the safe and lawful solutions that are offered in your state.
If you’re a green card holder…
If a legal resident with a green card wishes to travel or enter government buildings, they must still provide a real ID or another legitimate paperwork.
Additionally, it’s better to avoid waiting until the final minute because many DMV offices are overloaded with applications. Apply as soon as possible, or provide another acceptable form of identification.

Yes, you cannot obtain a real ID if you lack documentation.
However, that does not imply that you lack protection. As long as you are aware of your rights and keep yourself educated, there are alternative ways to travel, identify, and lead a regular life in the United States.
The simple rule is to avoid improvising. Use only legitimate documents, abide by the law, and prepare in advance. It’s always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to situations like this. I wish you luck!
