Semi carrying paint cans catches Fire; Melts Asphalt on I-65 in Jasper County

A portion of I-65 in northwest Indiana was totally shut down Monday when a semi’s brakes caught fire and swiftly spread to the remainder of the vehicle.

According to a news statement from the Indiana State Police, troopers were alerted about a vehicle fire on the interstate near Roseland, Jasper County.

The driver of a semi heading south had stopped for a technical problem when he saw a pair of brakes was lighting red. The brakes then caught fire, and the driver attempted to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher.

However, the fire swiftly spread from the cab to the trailer, igniting a load of paint cans. The fire was so powerful that neighboring trees caught fire, and the road’s asphalt surface caught fire as well.

Once workers from different departments were able to extinguish the fire, the northbound lanes of traffic were reopened. A contractor was hired to fix the damaged asphalt road surface.

The repair was scheduled to be completed by 4 a.m. Tuesday. Once completed, the southbound lanes would be opened.
