Shark Attacks 12-Year-Old Girl in South Carolina, Second U.S. Incident in a Week

A girl of twelve years old was attacked by a shark when she was swimming in the waters of South Carolina.

The assault took place on Tuesday, June 17, at approximately twelve o’clock in the afternoon local time, close to a resort on Hilton Head Island. The girl was said to have suffered “a leg injury consistent with lacerations typically associated with a shark bite,” as stated in a statement released by Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue.

Shore Beach Services and Fire Rescue personnel provided care to the victim, whose identity has not been disclosed to the general public.

It was administered on the premises. After that, she was transported by helicopter to a medical facility in Savannah, Georgia, which is approximately 40 miles away from Hilton Head.

Injuries sustained by the young girl were not considered to be life-threatening by the authorities.

It was possible to hear first responders advising medical dispatchers that the girl was aware and breathing, but that she had “lost a good amount of blood so far.”

This information was gathered from an audio recording of a call that was obtained. In addition to this, they mentioned that the lower right leg, just below the kneecap, was the location of the wound that the adolescent had sustained.

The event that took place in Hilton Head occurred a little over a week after a youngster had lost her hand as a result of a shark attack that had occurred a few days earlier off the coast of Florida.

On June 11, Leah Lendel, who was nine years old at the time, was participating in a snorkelling excursion with her family in Boca Grande. She was transported by helicopter to a hospital, where she underwent an emergency operation that lasted for six hours.

“I was just snorkeling, and then I went up to breathe,” Leah stated at a press conference on Thursday, June 19. “And then something hard bit me, and then it tried to tug me away.”

“Then I picked up my hand, and it’s all in blood,” the young girl added.

The Florida Museum of Natural History maintains The International Shark Attack File, which shows that there were 47 unprovoked shark attacks globally in 2024. (The museum claims that four of those 47 attacks were lethal.)
