Stalled car rear-ended by semi on I-94; 1 Dead, Child rescued after Chicago crash

CHICAGO – Illinois State Police say that a semi-truck rear-ended a car that was stopped on the northbound Dan Ryan Expressway at 59th Street late Friday night, killing the driver.

ISP says troopers were called to the scene around 11:30 p.m. A preliminary analysis shows that a semi-truck that couldn’t stop crashed into the back of a Nissan sedan that was stopped in the second left inside lane.

WGN News heard from people in the area that firemen had to free a woman and her young child from their car. Lisa Queen, who was close at a gas station, said she ran over and saw firefighters pull a woman out of the wreckage and start CPR on her.

“I saw them pull a baby from the vehicle, as well,” Queen said. “I have never seen a crash this bad before.”

ISP says the driver of the sedan was taken to a nearby hospital and declared dead there. A person in the car was also hurt and taken to a nearby hospital.

Police haven’t said who was killed or what happened to the passenger who was taken to the hospital and was seen by onlookers as a young child.

All lanes going north on I-94 were closed at the spot for four to five hours overnight. Traffic was diverted off the expressway at 63rd Street. By 4:15 a.m., all lanes were open again. ISP says Saturday.
