A 16-year-old student was struck and killed on Monday morning near Oak Ridge High School in Orange County, according to officials.
The deadly accident occurred around 8:10 a.m. on West Oak Ridge Road, near Winegard Road in Orlando.
Authorities have not published the girl’s identity.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 28-year-old Orlando woman driving a 2012 Dodge Avenger westbound on Oak Ridge Road collided with the girl, who was crossing the street but not at a marked crosswalk.
The girl was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center and later confirmed dead.
According to troopers, the driver was uninjured and remained at the site.
Orange County Public Schools later acknowledged that a youngster was struck and issued a statement regarding the accident.
“Families of Oak Ridge High School were notified that a student was struck by a vehicle (Monday) morning just off campus. School administration is assisting law enforcement as they investigate the incident,” Orange County Public Schools said in a statement.
The FHP reported Oak Ridge Road was closed west of Winegard Road until an investigation was conducted.
Orange County Commissioner Mayra Uribe is an Oak Ridge High School alumna who serves the community. She claims she has been campaigning for suitable signs and crosswalks to deter speeders. She has asked for a camera to catch speeders in front of the school.
“Due to legislation to pass two years ago in Tallahassee, we now will be able to give civil citations to vehicles at speed in a school zone area anytime throughout the school day,” Uribe said. “While it’s not in place yet, it is coming by 2026.”
According to Uribe, only 30 schools in Orange County will acquire speeding zone cameras, and Oak Ridge is almost guaranteed to get one, especially after this incident.
