After a car chase from San Ysidro to a neighborhood just south of Balboa Park, San Diego police shot and killed a suspect Monday.
According to San Diego police, the incident happened in Golden Hill, close to E Street, in the 800 block of 26th Street, just before 4 p.m. At the scene, the suspect passed away. According to officials, no policemen were shot.
In San Ysidro, police were first summoned to Sanger Place and Blanche Street after receiving reports of a guy, now identified as a thirty-something Hispanic man, acting recklessly with firearms and arguing with a cyclist.
The fact that the individual possessed both a rifle and a handgun saddened Lt. Juan Marquez of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Homicide Unit.
“The bicyclist left the area, and the suspect shot a round towards that subject but to the ground, not striking the victim,” Lt. Marquez said.
The man led police on a fast-paced pursuit in his white Ford F-150, but officers arrived shortly after.
According to authorities, the suspect started shooting into the air at roughly 3:30 p.m. in the vicinity of Cypress Drive and Interstate 805 before the pursuit started. Before heading onto Interstate 15, where he briefly stopped in the northbound lanes, the suspect led officers north on city streets and Interstate 5.
The suspect eventually got off the interstate close to downtown San Diego, traveled approximately half a mile east, and pulled over in the residential area of Golden Hill.
Residents told ABC 10News about their observations.
“I would say like 70 miles an hour,” said Daniel Lopez, speaking to the suspects’ driving speed. “It was pretty fast.”
Vika Yanez said, “I think it was a lady that she mentioned that she was driving and she had to pull over because the guy was just driving recklessly.”
Lopez added, “I would say this is the most insane thing that’s happened in this area.”
The suspect finally came to a dead end on 26th Street close to the intersection of E Street, according to Lt. Marquez.
