Suspect’s father knew of trouble, yet didn't call Police after officer was run over by ATV in Kansas City

Charges have now been brought against the father of the man who is suspected of running over a Kansas City police officer on an ATV.

Independence resident Marc Coleman showed up in Jackson County court on Wednesday. He is accused of obstructing the course of justice.

According to court filings, the 49-year-old never called police enforcement and was probably the first person his son, Kendall Coleman, contacted following the event.

According to court records, on April 22, the detective went to Marc Coleman’s house and made an effort to talk to him. A business card was put in the door of his car, which he was later saw driving, but there was no response at the door.

Marc Coleman admitted receiving the card during an interrogation, but he chose not to call the police because he thought they would get in touch with him later.

Marc Coleman claimed that the night of the incident, his son called and told him that although he was in serious trouble, someone was attempting to kill him, and “he needed to get out of there,” he could not tell him what he had done.

After that, Marc Coleman took his son to Colorado, where, according to court filings, Kendall Coleman told his sister that he was living with her for some time because he had gotten into a fight with someone.

According to Marc Coleman, he was unaware of the ATV incident until he returned from Colorado.

Kendall Coleman is being held without release on charges of first-degree assault, armed criminal activity, and aggravated escaping a stop.

Court filings state that on Saturday, April 12, at approximately 7 p.m., Kansas City police officers were stopping a group of motorcyclists and ATVs at the intersection of Main Street and Truman Road.

A KCPD officer tried to pull over and arrest an ATV driver, later identified as Kendall Coleman, during the stop.

According to court filings, the officer fell to the ground when Kendall Coleman reversed the ATV. Before fleeing the scene, Kendall Coleman pulled his ATV into a wheelie as the police was crouching down. He then dropped the vehicle’s front wheels onto the officer, running him over with all four tires.

Kendall Coleman was subsequently found by officers close to 31st Street and Southwest Boulevard, but he ran away once more and eventually found himself on I-35, where he was weaving between lanes while heading north in the southbound lanes.

According to court documents, Kendall Coleman was identified and apprehended as a result of an anonymous Crime Stoppers report.
