Tire blowout causes semi to overturn on I-41, 2 injured in chain reaction crash

A multi-vehicle crash occurred on I-41 in southeastern Wisconsin Thursday afternoon when a semi toppled due to a blown tire, injuring two people.

Multiple 911 calls were received about 4:05 p.m. on April 17 reporting a semi-truck crash on I-41 between Highway 28 and County Tk D, prompting a response from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

Callers told authorities that the semi had overturned in the median, causing additional vehicles to crash. When first responders came, the semi driver was out of the cab and uninjured.

An examination revealed that the southbound semi experienced a steer-tire blowout while heading along I-41, forcing it to overturn in the median.

Due to the blowout and impact, a considerable amount of dirt and stones was thrown into the northbound lanes, causing two more northbound automobiles to collide. Two occupants in one of the northbound automobiles were sent to a nearby hospital with probable minor injuries.

The southbound lanes were closed for about 20 minutes, while the northbound lanes were restricted for almost five hours to clear the semi and debris, as well as for emergency personnel.

No other injuries were reported.
