Tourist Falls Off Cliff While Attempting Close-Up of Hawaii Volcano Eruption

It seemed as if he were caught between a rock and a burning area.

In an attempt to capture a close-up view of the eruption of Hawaii’s Kīlauea Volcano, a Bostonian fell off the edge of a cliff, yet he amazingly survived the ordeal.

In the course of his search for a vantage point from which to observe the eruption that occurred on June 11, the man, who was thirty years old, came dangerously close to a precipice when he was hiking along the Byron Ledge Trail in Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. It was the 25th eruption that had occurred in Hawaii since December.

According to a press statement, officials with the National Park Service stated that the man fell over the edge of the cliff as he was wandering around without a lantern or headlight. The incident occurred approximately nine o’clock in the evening.

The area was searched for the man by search and rescue teams that were already there at the location to assist in the management of traffic prior to the explosion.

After a tree miraculously broke his fall, they were eventually able to locate him forty feet below the edge of the cliff.

The man would have fallen a further one hundred feet if he hadn’t hit the tree, which, according to the authorities, may have resulted in his death.

Instead, he walked away from the accident with only minor facial injuries, leaving him with the scare of a lifetime.

While the man dangled and waited to be rescued, Kīlauea erupted in a lava eruption that reached an astounding height of 330 feet into the air.

This eruption was so intense that it was practically difficult to miss, even for those who were trapped in trees.

During the previous year, another visitor who was attempting to find a decent position to witness a sunrise in Hawaii drove off a cliff that was sixty feet high and plummeted directly into the ocean.

While the man and his vehicle were swept away, he managed to escape the tragedy uninjured, suffering just minor facial injuries and a case of hypothermia. The circumstances surrounding the event were a mystery.
