So far, May has been a rainy month. We haven’t been able to avoid rain for more than two or three days. Additionally, we are closely monitoring the forecast and its implications for your weekend plans as Memorial Day draws near.
The tri-state saw cold and rainy weather on Wednesday and Thursday due to an offshore low-pressure system. Temperatures dropped to the 40s and 50s, and the area received between half an inch and an inch of rain, with higher amounts locally along eastern Long Island.
Although most places begin to dry out on Thursday night, this low-pressure system continues to have an impact as the week draws to a close.
It will be more pleasant on Friday. It won’t be raining all day, but clouds will still predominate in the sky and there may even be a stray shower or two. Although you won’t need to use the little umbrella very often, if at all, bring it with you before you leave for the day just to be safe.
In addition to the drier skies, temperatures will gradually rise.

On Friday afternoon, we will be able to reach 60 degrees. Although that is much warmer than Thursday’s highs of the upper 40s and low 50s, it is still ten to fifteen degrees warmer than the typical 73-degree temperature for this time of year. It will feel less like late May and more like early April.
On a similarly cool note, we formally welcome the weekend and the unofficial beginning of summer.

Though only slightly, temperatures are still on the rise. Our highs on Saturday and Sunday remain in the 60s. Breezy conditions accompany these cooler temperatures, particularly on Long Island. It would be wise to pack a light jacket or sweater if you intend to attend the Jones Beach Air Show on either day.
High temperatures will eventually return to the 70s by Monday, Memorial Day.
The best day of the weekend will be today. The weather is ideal for outdoor barbecues; it will be warm and partly sunny without being uncomfortable. Regardless of what you have planned, it will be a beautiful day to be outside.
Regarding beach weather, there is only one warning in the forecast.
It’s by no means a bad forecast, particularly if you want to take a stroll on the boardwalk or along the beach, but if you’re hoping for swimming and sunbathing conditions, we’re not quite there yet.
Even though you might feel fine on the beach, you won’t want to spend much time in the water on this day because the ocean temperatures are only in the upper 50s and the coastal temperatures are in the 60s to low 70s.
One positive aspect of this Memorial Day weekend is the dry skies, even though temperatures are generally cool. This will be a welcome change as we have historically had terrible luck with rain on Memorial Day Weekend.
Looking back, all but two of the previous ten holiday weekends have seen detectable rain.
Even though we can’t totally rule out a single shower or sprinkler, the majority of us will survive the weekend without any problems. Even though our “start of summer” will feel much more like a continuation of spring, that alone makes it a pretty good weekend forecast.
