Two charged in Birmingham drive-by shooting that killed 17-year-old

In connection with the targeted drive-by shooting killing of a kid in Birmingham, two individuals have been charged.

Lorenzo Davis Jr., 17, a student at Huffman High School, was killed Thursday night. Edjuan Figguers, 21, and Deleon Hawkins, 22, are accused of capital murder.

According to police, the fatal gunshot may have been caused by a prior altercation between the victim and one or both of the accused.

Around 11:30 p.m. on Thursday, a flurry of gunfire broke out in Birmingham’s Collegeville public housing development, located in the 2900 block of 29th Avenue North.

Officers discovered Davis unconscious inside a unit when they got to the property. At 11:50 p.m., the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service declared him dead on the spot.

In the double digits, investigators posted evidence markers, the majority of which noted the existence of shell casings.

Outside the crime scene, dozens of friends and family members gathered, clearly upset. The victim’s parents were present as well and broke down in tears.

“My baby is dead,” stated the mother, who was crying.

According to Officer De Rell Freeman, the quick arrests were made possible by the cooperation of the BPD’s Special Operations Bureau, the Crime Reduction Team, and the Tactical Unit, with assistance from the Real Time Crime Center.

Police Chief Michael Pickett accompanied the arrest teams.

In the 900 block of Ninth Street Southwest, Figguers were arrested. In the 300 block of Second Street West, Hawkins was taken into custody.

The Jefferson County Jail will hold both suspects without bond.

According to Pickett, this is yet another illustration of what occurs when accountability, urgency, and strategy all come together in real time. We’re determined to act swiftly, strategically, and to demonstrate to this city that violence will not be tolerated.
