Every day, Lauren Claus takes her puppy, Penny, to work. Following a “horrific” incident on the Upper West Side, Penny is currently in the intensive care unit, fighting for her life.
“She’s my little buddy,” Claus said Sunday. “I spend every day with her.”
Penny and her ex-boyfriend share custody of her, and on Saturday night, while walking their dog close to Columbus Avenue and West 85th Street, two pit bulls attacked, according to Claus.
“The dog just turns its head and lunges at my dog,” Claus said.
Video captures the tumultuous moment as onlookers scream and attempt to rescue Penny from the two dogs’ hold. As Claus’s ex-boyfriend tries to free Penny with a cane, the video shows several individuals attempting to drag the dogs away.
According to the NYPD, a 37-year-old lady was attempting to free Penny when one of the other dogs bit her. The NYPD said a 64-year-old man who was trying to assist was assaulted and had his cell phone thrown at him during the assault.
According to Claus, Penny was in surgery for hours following the incident due to her severe injuries. However, the doctors are hopeful that Penny will survive.
“She’s a trouper,” Claus said.
Claus said she is dissatisfied with her legal alternatives, particularly because her neighbors informed her that these pit bulls have a violent past. She is urging residents to discuss ways to stop attacks like this one with their legislators.
Claus remarked, “I need someone to do something.” “Call everyone who can assist.”
