The well-known Iowa-based company Wells Enterprises, which makes iconic frozen dessert brands including Halo Top and Blue Bunny, has voluntarily recalled almost 18,000 ice cream and frozen yoghurt containers because of possible plastic contamination.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced earlier this week that the recall was formally announced on April 25.
The impacted products can include pieces of foreign plastic, which could be harmful to customers’ health if consumed.
As to the FDA, the recall is classified as Class II, meaning that although the product is unlikely to result in severe or permanent health issues, its ingestion may have short-term or medically recoverable negative health effects.
Depending on the size and kind of the plastic bits, this may entail choking dangers or other possible injuries like cuts.
The 22 different ice cream and frozen yoghurt flavours that are part of the recall are all packaged in 3-gallon tubs that are usually utilised for food service, restaurants, or ice cream shops rather than being sold to customers directly in grocery stores.
More than 100 distribution centres in the US, including those in Iowa, Michigan, Illinois, and Texas, received these tubs.
Many of the recalled containers are probably still in storage or have not yet been utilised because the “use by” dates for the impacted products range from March 2026 to October 2026.
All distribution facilities, merchants, and food service providers who have the recalled products on hand are being asked by Wells Enterprises to cease using them right now and adhere to the company’s return or disposal guidelines.
The official FDA recall notice provides consumers and companies with a complete list of impacted flavours and lot codes, along with identifying details to aid in locating and isolating the potentially tainted items.
