Water Deemed Safe Boil Advisory Lifted in 5 Massachusetts Towns

As of Sunday afternoon, the boil water order that had been issued for certain residents in municipalities located in the southeastern region of Massachusetts was withdrawn.

Due to the fact that testing revealed the presence of total coliform bacteria and E. coli, users of the Abington/Rockland Joint Water Works were informed on Friday that they should not consume water without first going through the process of boiling it.

This particular water system provides water to the communities of Abington, Rockland, Pembroke, Hanson, and Whitman, among others.

“We are pleased to report that the problem has been corrected and that it is no longer necessary to boil water prior to consumption,” the Joint Water Works stated. “We are pleased to report that the problem has corrected. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience.”

It has not yet been determined how the germs could have made their way into the water supply. Diseases such as diarrhea, stomach cramps, vomiting, and fever are some of the symptoms that can be caused by E. coli, which has the potential to cause serious sickness.

On Friday, residents of Abington brought their own bottles and jugs to fill up at a water station that had both spring water and ice.

What should be done once the order to boil water has been lifted?

Officials from the municipality are nevertheless advising impacted customers to take certain preventative measures, despite the fact that the boil water order has been lifted and the water from the tap is now safe to drink for consumption.

According to the Abington Health Department, individuals should flush their lines by running cold water taps for a number of minutes, dispose of any ice that was produced during the time that the boil order was in effect, and change all water filters, including those for the refrigerator, faucets, and under-sink systems.
