In 2025, Alabama football must make a crucial choice.
Who is going to hold it?
James Burnip, the previous kick and field goal record holder for the last few seasons, is leaving for the NFL. This past spring, he signed with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent.
It’s still unclear who will take Burnip’s spot as the holder and, eventually, the punter. Kalen DeBoer didn’t specify who that man would be, at least.
According to DeBoer, it’s usually within that unit. You will frequently have your punters (hold). Blake (Doud) performed a good job today, in my opinion. Anderson (Green) also performs admirably. Because they spend so much time together, we often start with their familiarity and consistency with all the exercises they take every day, as long as they are able to do it.
However, there’s always a chance that someone else who isn’t a punter might hold. QBs like Mac Jones, Tua Tagovailoa, and AJ McCarron also served as holders while Nick Saban was the Crimson Tide’s coach.
DeBoer stated, “I always like to get a quarterback or some skill guy involved at some point.” Knowing that you have the ability to have a playmaker hold the football puts some pressure on the opposing side. As we get through the fall, we’ll see.
On Wednesday, Alabama conducted its first of 20 preseason drills. On August 30, the Crimson Tide will play their first game of the season against Florida State.
Doud is one of the bettors vying for Burnip’s spot, having transferred from Colorado School of Mines. Another is Alex Asparuhov.
According to DeBoer, the punter position (competition) is most likely the most open.
According to DeBoer, Blake in particular had some reps this spring but is still developing and strengthening. The two men are in competition. Alex’s physical condition has improved as well. His physical progress—just being able to go out there and do it—is, I suppose, better than anticipated. The competition that two will bring excites me.I am aware of their ceiling; they have some quite high ceilings. I have high expectations for them.
Whether one of those two guys will also become the holder is still up in the air.
